about advice songs

advice songs is a songwriting project and musical toolkit. I started writing these songs with only myself in mind as both performer and audience. I’ve learned so many lessons in my life through self reflection, therapy, readings, and conversations with friends, but I often have a hard time calling upon those lessons when I’m in emotionally challenging moments. I wrote these advice songs as quick and easy ways to remember my own strategies when I need them the most, to care for myself and internalize what I want to know more thoroughly.

Eventually, they started to bubble up when having conversations with friends about difficult times in their own lives. I started to wonder if they might be a helpful toolkit for other people. If maybe these hyper personal little songs might connect my soul to someone else’s who felt the same rough time. So, I decided to write accompanying essays for each song, in order to more fully explain the stories, strategies, and successes behind the lyrics. I hope they’ll be a helpful toolkit for you or for a friend.
